Why Invest in a Dishwasher?

Busy Australian households with daily home cooking lifestyles will benefit from the time-saving results of dishwashers. But aside from the time-saving efforts, dishwashers’ advanced technologies and energy-efficient motors will also ensure reduced use of resources, especially when compared to hand washing. Additionally, with higher temperature and steam-enhanced programs, premium dishwashers deliver hygienic washing results that ensure a cleaner dishwasher.

Dishwasher Types for Every Kitchen

From compact apartments to large family homes, there is a premium dishwasher to suit every kitchen layout and lifestyle. Choose from freestanding dishwashers for flexible installation, built-in models for a streamlined look or fully integrated dishwashers that blend seamlessly into cabinetry. With a wide range of dishwasher sizes, finishes and configurations available, finding the right luxury dishwasher to match your space and daily needs is easy. Browse the most common luxury dishwasher styles below to find the perfect fit for the heart of your home:

  • Built-In Dishwashers & Integrated Dishwashers: Unified built-in dishwashers create a seamless look with matching external cabinetry to blend into your kitchen with ease.
  • Freestanding Dishwashers: Install a freestanding dishwasher without cabinetry and have the flexibility to remove the appliances if required. Find an array of styles, from sleek black dishwashers to classic white or silver.
  • Benchtop Dishwashers: Unlike other dishwasher types, benchtop dishwashers are compactly designed to sit on the kitchen counter and connect to your kitchen tap with a hose.
  • Small & Compact Dishwashers: With similar powerful performance, make the most of a studio or compact kitchen with a small dishwasher. Smaller kitchens may benefit from slimline 45cm dishwasher designs.

What are Integrated Dishwashers?

Create a seamless kitchen with concealed appliances for a coordinated look and feel. Integrated dishwashers are installed snug into the kitchen’s cabinetry with a matching front door panel and concealed controls at the top of the dishwasher door. While the dishwasher itself features similar functions to freestanding and built-in models, the primary benefit of an integrated dishwasher is its hidden look and coordinated cabinetry to blend into your kitchen with ease.

Freestanding vs Built-In Dishwashers

Freestanding and built-in dishwashers feature similar functions and programs, but they differ most by their design and installation method. As its names suggest, a Freestanding dishwasher stands on its own and is both portable and moveable so it can easily be placed in a dedicated dishwasher nook. Freestanding dishwashers provide flexibility of placement, as they can be stand-alone next to the kitchen benchtop and not just under it. A Freestanding dishwasher can also be removed so that you can take it with you when moving.

Meanwhile, Built-In dishwashers are designed to be installed snug in the dedicated dishwasher recessed niche. Once installed, a built-in dishwasher is meant to look seamless and part of the kitchen cabinetry.

Dishwasher vs Dish Drawer

Dish drawers differ from premium dishwashers in two areas: their placement and functionality. Dish drawers, specifically single drawer models, can be installed at bench height to ensure easier loading and unloading. Double dish drawers, on the other hand, look like a typical dishwasher, featuring two individual drawers that are adaptable to your needs. Wash in one drawer, stack to wash later in the other or run two cycles at the same time like gentle fine glasses in the top and large serving trays in the bottom drawer. Dish drawers are also ideal for washing half loads for smaller households, helping you save on water consumption.

Choosing the Right Dishwasher for Your Home

Choosing the right luxury dishwasher depends on your cooking habits, household size and kitchen layout. The right model can improve cleaning performance, provide suitable cycle options and support a more efficient kitchen workflow. Consider the factors below to help determine the best dishwasher for your home:

  • Household Size & Usage: ideal for individuals, couples, families and entertainers
  • Kitchen Layout & Installation Type: Freestanding, built-in or integrated dishwashers, depending on your lifestyle and kitchen set-up.
  • Size & Capacity: For small spaces, opt for compact 45cm dishwashers in comparison to large full-size dishwashers.
  • Noise Level: Particularly important for open-plan homes where the living and kitchen spaces blend seamlessly.
  • Design Preferences: Sleek black dishwashers for modern homes and panel-ready integrated dishwashers for minimalist kitchens.

Dishwasher Sizes and Dimensions

Standard Dishwashers:

A full-size dishwasher is commonly around 60cm wide, 85cm high and 60cm deep. This standard dishwasher size is suitable for medium and large households. This dishwasher's size allows for ample space for kitchenware and larger cookware.

Small Dishwashers:

Compact and small dishwasher designs are typically 45cm wide, 55-60cm high and 50-55cm deep. This size is ideal for a smaller kitchen layout, utility room or studio living. Although their size is compact, this does not restrict the place setting on offer.

Slimline Dishwashers:

Slimline dishwashers measure approximately 45cm wide, 85cm high, and 60cm deep. Offering kitchens a great middle ground between compact and full-size models. They typically fit 9 to 11 place settings, making them ideal for smaller families and couples or compact kitchen spaces.

Installing A Dishwasher

Some dishwashers, like freestanding dishwashers, can easily be installed and set up yourself before use. If unsure, a licensed and experienced plumber should be employed to install the water connections and drain hoses of your dishwasher. Premium built-in and integrated dishwashers will almost always require the expertise of a plumber and cabinetmaker to ensure that the dishwasher fits within the cabinetry of your kitchen.

Tips for Cleaning a Dishwasher

Help your premium dishwasher last for years to come with regular maintenance and cleaning. Below are cleaning tips and tricks:

  • Use a cleaning agent and a soft cloth to wipe down the exterior
  • Remove and clean the dishwasher filter regularly by rinsing in warm water and using a soft brush to scrub off built-up particles
  • Run a dishwasher cleaning tablet or liquid every few months to clean the interior of the dishwasher. Alternatively, run a hot wash cycle with a cup of vinegar on the top rack
  • Remove accessories like the cutlery basket or tray and scrub with a soft brush or toothbrush to remove any stuck-on food particles

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Should a Dishwasher Last?

Many dishwashers, on average, feature a 10-year life expectancy. Dishwashers used daily will start to show signs of ageing around the five-year mark, so it’s worth investing in careful cleaning and maintenance.

Tip: Observe the dishwasher’s warranty to enjoy greater peace of mind, most dishwashers feature a warranty period of 2 to 5 years. The longer the warranty, the longer you can use the dishwasher with peace of mind.

Are Dishwashers Hygienic?

Compared to hand-washing, dishwashers are much more hygienic as they wash with high temperatures and hot water wash cycles. With the ability to effectively dissolve detergent, washing with a dishwasher will ensure greater peace of mind, especially when cleaning jars, sterilising baby bottles, and removing germs and bacteria from dishes.

How Do I Choose an Efficient Dishwasher?

Dishwashers are tested for energy and water efficiency before receiving a rating. An Energy Rating rates the energy efficiency, and a WELS rating indicates the water efficiency of a dishwasher. As a guide, the higher the Energy and WELS rating, the greater the efficiency of the dishwasher. When purchasing a dishwasher, opt for one with an Energy and WELS rating of 3.5-Star and above, with an easily accessible filter to help ensure routine maintenance.

How to use a Dishwasher Efficiently?

There are some easy ways to ensure effective and efficient use of your dishwasher, including running the dishwasher only when there’s a full load, selecting lower temperatures and shorter cycles and when possible, running the ‘eco’ or ‘energy saving’ mode. If the dishwasher allows, instead of running the drying cycle, let the dishes dry naturally. Consider running your dishwasher during off-peak periods, like late at night, to save on energy costs.

How do I install an inlet and drain hose for your dishwasher?
  1.  Make sure the dishwasher is switched off and disconnected from the power before installation.
  2. Ensure that the dishwasher is close to a water tap and drain.
  3. Installing the inlet: Thread the dishwasher’s hose through the cabinet’s cut out, checking that there’s no twists or bends.
  4. Connect and secure the water supply inlet hose to the water inlet tap. Then turn on the tap and check for leaks.
  5. To install the drainage hose, install it into a sink drainpipe branch. Note: the branch should be above the trap so that the bend is at least 50mm above the floor.
  6. Use the dishwasher’s supplied drain hose and ensure that there are no twists.
  7. Push the drain hose onto the spigot and secure it with a clamp. If the drain is new, drill out the drain spigot.
  8. Both the inlet and drain hose is now connected, and your dishwasher is ready to use!
