Frequently Asked Questions

What should I look out for in a rangehood?

When choosing a rangehood, consider these key factors: Style: Choose a style that complements your kitchen design. Size: Ideally the rangehood should be the same size or bigger than your cooktop. Extraction rate: Ensure the rangehood's extraction rate (m³/h) is suitable for the type of cooking you do and the size of your kitchen. For instance, a powerful cooktop will require a higher extraction rate to effectively remove cooking byproducts. Ducting: Consider ducted vs. ductless (recirculating). Ducted is more effective but requires installation while recirculating uses filters but isn't as efficient at removing smoke and grease. Noise level: A lower noise rating ensures peaceful operation. Features: Consider features like lighting, speed settings, automatic shut-off, and easy-to-clean filters. Are integrated rangehoods the same as undermount?

While integrated and undermount rangehoods are designed to be concealed within cabinetry, they have subtle differences. Undermount rangehoods are installed beneath existing cabinetry, while integrated rangehoods are designed to be fully enclosed within custom-built cabinetry, creating a seamless appearance. Therefore, while similar in purpose, they differ in their installation and the extent of their integration.
Which type of rangehood filter is best?

The best rangehood filter depends on your needs; metal mesh filters are durable and washable, ideal for general use while charcoal filters excel at odour removal, crucial for recirculating rangehoods. Some rangehood models combine both for optimal grease and odour capture. Consider your cooking style and rangehood type to choose the right filter or speak to our friendly team at your local Designer Appliances gallery for expert advice.
What's a quiet rangehood operating noise level?

A quiet rangehood typically operates below 50 dBA, which is comparable to a normal conversation. Anything above 60 dBA starts to become noticeable in an open-plan setting, particularly at higher fan speeds. At the premium end, silent rangehoods from brands like Schweigen use a remote motor system positioned outside the kitchen, in a roof cavity or external wall, which removes the noise source from the room almost entirely. If you cook regularly in an open-plan space, it is one of the more worthwhile upgrades you can make.
